Laser Engraving on Cork: Settings, Materials, and Real Results
How cork behaves under a diode laser — power and speed ranges, scorch control, sealing, and what separates a clean cork engrave from a burnt one.

Cork is one of the most forgiving materials a small laser shop can run, and one of the easiest to ruin. It engraves fast, smells like toast, and shows every mistake in high contrast. Here is what we have learned running hundreds of cork coasters through a diode laser.
Why cork engraves so well
Cork is the outer bark of the cork oak — a closed-cell tissue that is mostly air. Low density means the beam removes material with very little power, and the burnt edge stays dark against the tan surface. You get contrast for free, which is not true of maple or acrylic.
Starting settings for a diode laser
These are starting points for a 5–10W optical diode, not gospel. Every machine, lens, and cork batch is different — run a material test grid first.
- Raster engrave: roughly 15–30% power at 2500–4000 mm/min, 0.08–0.10 mm line interval.
- Vector score (outlines): 20–35% power at 1200–2000 mm/min, single pass.
- Cut-through on 3mm cork: 80–100% power, 250–450 mm/min, 2–3 passes with air assist.
- Air assist: on, always. It is the single biggest quality difference on cork.
In LightBurn, build a test grid that sweeps power on one axis and speed on the other, then pick the lightest settings that still give full contrast. Cork does not need much.
Controlling scorch and smoke staining
The most common cork failure is not a bad engrave — it is a good engrave surrounded by a yellow-brown haze of resin smoke.
- Run air assist and exhaust together. Smoke that lingers on the surface stains it.
- Drop power before you drop speed. Overpowering causes flare-out on cell walls and a fuzzy edge.
- Engrave dark-to-light in the design. Large solid fills produce the most smoke; place them where the head travels first.
- Wipe with a dry melamine sponge after. It lifts surface haze without water.
- Never soak cork. Water swells the cells and lifts the fibers permanently.
Cork grades matter more than settings
- Fine-grain agglomerated cork — the best choice for detail. Small, even granules, consistent burn.
- Coarse-grain cork — cheap, but large granules drop out of fine linework and leave pits.
- Rubberized cork — contains nitrile; it smells acrid, engraves muddy, and we avoid it.
- Natural sheet cork — beautiful, inconsistent density, expect variation across the sheet.
Thickness of 3mm is the practical minimum for a coaster that does not curl. We use 4mm.
Design rules for cork
- Minimum stroke width around 0.6mm — thinner lines vanish into the grain.
- Avoid tiny reversed-out text; the burnt field fills in counters on letters like e and a.
- High-contrast line art and skyline silhouettes work better than photographic grayscale.
- Leave a 4–5mm clear margin from the edge so the design survives a slightly off-center blank.
Sealing — mostly do not
Cork's whole job on a coaster is absorbing condensation. Sealing it makes a pretty object that slides a wet glass around. If a customer needs a wipeable surface, cork is the wrong substrate — use slate or finished hardwood instead. Our coaster material comparison covers the tradeoffs.
Safety
Cork ignites. It is dry, porous, and holds an ember after the beam moves on. Never run cork unattended, keep exhaust running, and keep a CO2 extinguisher within reach. Two cut passes at moderate power are safer than one slow high-power pass.
