How to Store Jewelry in a Small Space Without Ruining It

Most jewelry damage happens in storage, not on the body. A drawer with everything loose in it does more harm in a year than daily wear does in five.

The three enemies, in order

1. Humidity. Silver tarnish is a sulfur reaction accelerated by moisture. A bathroom shelf is the worst place in the home.
2. Contact. Quartz at hardness 7 scratches nearly everything softer, and household dust is mostly quartz.
3. Motion. Chains tangle when they can slide. Immobilize and the problem disappears.

A system that fits on one shelf

• Pouch per piece. Soft drawstring bags stop contact scratching for pennies. Every piece we ship comes with one for this reason.
• Anti-tarnish strips. Chemically active paper that absorbs sulfur. Replace every six months.
• Silica packets. Save the ones from shoe boxes; dry them in a low oven and reuse.
• A corkboard and pins. Hang chains vertically. Free, and it ends tangling permanently.
• Hard case for travel. A pill organizer holds earrings and rings better than any travel roll.

What not to do

Do not store in the original cardboard box long-term — paper and cardboard release sulfur compounds. Do not seal in plastic without a desiccant; trapped humidity is worse than open air. Do not hang stone pendants in direct sun, which fades amethyst, rose quartz, and any dyed material.

A five-minute monthly reset

1. Wipe each metal piece with a dry microfiber cloth.
2. Check clasps and jump rings by pulling gently.
3. Swap out any spent anti-tarnish strip.
4. Return everything to its own pouch.
