Fine jewelry does poorly in checked bags and even worse in loose toiletry pouches. The trick is a small, dedicated case that lives in your personal item and never leaves your sight.

What to pack

  • A roll-up organizer with individual padded slots
  • Two microfiber cloths — one for wearing, one clean
  • A small silica packet for humid climates
  • Backup findings if you know your clasp is aging

What to leave home

One-of-a-kind pieces, anything sentimental, and porous stones that don't like humidity swings (opalite, turquoise, pearls). A capsule of one or two versatile pendants covers most trips — see our thoughts on a smaller rotation in everyday vs. occasion jewelry.

Airport security

Metal jewelry rarely triggers scanners, but heavy pieces should go in the tray to avoid pat-downs. TSA's guidance confirms fine jewelry can stay on the body in most cases — err on removing anything you'd hate to lose.

Hotel and Airbnb storage

  1. Use the room safe when you can — but photograph the pieces and combination before locking up.
  2. If there's no safe, split pieces between two locations in the room.
  3. Never leave jewelry in a bathroom overnight — steam and humidity are worse than a suitcase.

Beach and pool

Salt water and chlorine are hard on stones and metal. Remove before swimming, and rinse skin with fresh water before re-wearing. Details in our full care guide.

A three-piece necklace set makes an ideal travel capsule — one stone, one heart, one everyday. Enough to feel put-together without much to lose.
