Opening an Etsy shop is the lowest-friction way to start selling handmade work online. The platform already has buyers, built-in search, and tools for payments, shipping labels, and taxes. What separates shops that grow from shops that stall is treating the first 90 days like a real business launch, not a hobby experiment.

This guide covers setup to first sale, with the practical details we learned running Robert Anthony Art on Etsy.

Before you create the shop

  1. Pick a name that can grow. Avoid names tied to one product. 'Robert Anthony Art' covers jewelry, engraving, coasters, and leather without boxing us in.
  2. Check trademark conflicts. Search the USPTO database and your state's business name registry before you print labels.
  3. Open a separate bank account. Mixing personal and business money makes taxes miserable. Most banks offer free small-business checking.
  4. Get a seller's permit if your state requires it. In California, the CDTFA issues seller's permits free for businesses that collect sales tax.

Set up the shop

Etsy's setup walks you through the basics: country, currency, language, payment account, and billing. Use a real profile photo or logo, write a short but specific About section, and set shop policies before you list anything.

  • Shop banner and icon — keep them clean and readable at small sizes.
  • About section — tell buyers who makes the work, where it is made, and why it matters. Search engines index this text.
  • Policies — processing time, shipping times, customs duties, and cancellation rules. Clear policies prevent disputes.

Create listings that sell

Each listing is a small sales page. The title, photos, description, and tags all need to work together.

  1. Title: front-load the main keyword. 'Laser Engraved Aluminum Dog Tag Necklace — Cross Design' beats 'Beautiful Handmade Necklace Gift for Him'.
  2. Photos: use all ten slots. White background hero, detail, lifestyle, scale, packaging, and process shots.
  3. Description: answer the questions buyers will ask — size, materials, care, shipping time, and who it is for.
  4. Tags: use all 13 tags. Mix broad ('handmade necklace') and specific ('mahogany obsidian pendant').
  5. Attributes: fill in color, occasion, length, and style. Etsy uses these for filtered search.

Price for sustainability

The most common early mistake is underpricing. A sustainable handmade price covers materials, labor at a real hourly rate, fees, shipping materials, and a small profit margin. A simple starting formula is:

(Materials + Labor + Overhead) × 2 = wholesale price; × 4 = retail price

If the number feels high, reduce production time or material cost rather than working for free. Etsy's fees run around 6.5% transaction fee plus 3% payment processing plus listing fees and, if you use Etsy ads, an advertising cut. Build that in from the start.

Shipping and fulfillment

Buyers expect tracking and reasonable delivery times. Start simple:

  • Weigh finished packages with the box, mailer, and filler included.
  • Buy postage through Etsy — it is usually cheaper than the post office and tracking uploads automatically.
  • Offer free shipping strategically. Build the cost into the item price rather than absorbing it.
  • Pack securely. Jewelry needs rigid mailers or small boxes, not plain envelopes.

Taxes and bookkeeping

From the first sale, keep records. Save receipts for materials, equipment, fees, mileage, and shipping. Use a spreadsheet or free tool like Wave. The IRS has clear guidance on when a hobby becomes a business; most active sellers cross that line quickly.

If you are in California, you may also qualify for local grants and small-business support. We mapped the realistic options in grants for small creative businesses in California.

The first 90 days

Etsy's algorithm favors active shops. In the first three months, aim to:

  1. List at least 20 items, even if some are variations.
  2. Renew or add one listing every few days to signal activity.
  3. Answer messages within 24 hours.
  4. Ship on time and ask happy buyers for reviews.
  5. Use Etsy Stats to see which keywords bring views, then make more of what works.

Sales rarely happen in the first week. They build as your listings, photos, and reviews compound. The makers who last are the ones who keep improving the shop instead of waiting for traffic.
