Amethyst for February: A Birthstone Gift Guide
Why amethyst is the February birthstone, what makes a good amethyst gift, and how to pick a piece that will actually get worn.
By Robert Anthony · · 5 min read

Amethyst has been the February birthstone in modern jewelry tradition for more than a century — long enough that the American Gem Society still lists it as the standard. It's a good birthstone to give: durable, widely loved, and available at price points from twenty-dollar tumbles to museum-grade cathedral geodes.
Why amethyst became February's stone
The pairing is Roman in origin — amethyst was associated with sobriety and clear thought, values suited to the reflective, mid-winter month. The GIA description covers the mineralogy; our own amethyst care guide covers wear and fading.
What makes a good amethyst gift
- Color you can actually see indoors. Deep violet reads across lighting conditions; pale lavender can look gray under overhead LED.
- A setting that fits their life. Raw wire-wrapped points suit casual, expressive wearers; polished pendants suit anyone who dresses more traditionally.
- A chain length they'll wear. 18 inches is safe for most necklines.
- A gift box, always. The presentation is half the moment.
Three pieces we recommend for February gifting
Each of these ships in a gift box from the studio.
- Raw amethyst wire-wrapped pendant — for the recipient who likes the stone showing.
- Polished amethyst pendant on a fine chain — for the recipient who wants jewelry-first.
- Three-stone gift set with amethyst — for a milestone birthday where a single piece feels thin.
Care, quickly
Amethyst fades in strong sun. Store dark, clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush, skip the ultrasonic. The full routine is in the stone care guide, and gifting logistics — cards, wrapping, timing — are in the gift guide under $50.
If you want help picking between two pieces for a specific person, message the studio — Robert or Angela will reply the same day.
