Rose quartz gets its pink from trace amounts of dumortierite fibers (in the massive variety we typically see) or titanium and manganese impurities (in rarer transparent crystals). Either way, the color is genuinely delicate — direct sunlight fades it faster than almost any other quartz.

At a glance

  • Family: Quartz
  • Mohs hardness: 7
  • Color: pale to medium pink; deeper pink is rarer
  • Sources: Brazil, Madagascar, India, US

Keep it out of the sun

We can't overstate this. A rose quartz pendant worn daily at the beach for one summer can visibly lose color. Store dark, keep it out of sunlit windowsills, and it will hold its pink for decades. Everything else about it is easy — see the general care guide.

Symbolism

Rose quartz has been given as a token of affection since antiquity. It's still the stone most people reach for as a Valentine's gift or an anniversary marker — the color reads soft without reading juvenile.

Cleaning

Warm water, soft brush, pat dry. Avoid perfume and sunscreen touching the stone directly — the residue clouds the pink over time.

Our single-stone rose quartz pendants are hand-strung on cord that ages well against skin.
